The Homer Public Library is hosting a special 20th Anniversary Open House on Saturday, September 19, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, honoring decades of local history and community connection! π
From its humble beginnings in 1938 inside an old schoolhouse to a volunteer-built 600-square-foot cabin on Pioneer Avenue, the library has grown alongside the town thanks to generations of dedicated volunteers. π²
This milestone event features historical displays, guided tours, fun games, special storytimes, informational tables, and a presentation looking back at the library's rich past and future plans. π
The afternoon will wrap up with a time capsule dedication, sealing away local memories to be reopened in 2046! β³

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum of the North has received a $300,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to help build an outdoor exhibit space for the historic vehicle featured in "Into the Wild."
After being airlifted from the Stampede Trail in 2020 due to safety concerns, the 1946 bus underwent years of conservation to repair damage and weatherproof it for permanent display. π²
Plans call for placing the bus in a free, 24/7 outdoor pavilion along an accessible trail in the woods near the museum parking lot, with the possibility of guided interior tours. ποΈ
The museum still needs to raise an additional $100,000 to install power, lighting, and security cameras to protect the site before opening to the public. π‘
While the vehicle remains in storage, an indoor exhibit currently displays Christopher McCandlessβ items alongside information about the bus's prior history as a military transport, school bus, and city transit vehicle. π
The museum hopes to hold a soft opening late next summer, with a grand reopening targeted for summer 2028. ποΈ
