The city garage is finally humming with life after an intense stretch of the 42nd Iron Dog Race! 🏁 Young guns Evan Barber and Steffen Booth of Team 3 were the first to hit the halfway point in Nome following a chaotic few days of deep snow and diversions. After a massive weather delay in Kotzebue and disappearing sea ice near Elim, racers were forced onto the inland mail trail where they battled two to three feet of fresh powder. Teams spent hours bogged down near Mount Kwiniuk, even cutting trees and branches just to find the track. ❄️ With the field arriving throughout the night, wrench day is now set for Thursday and standings are being adjusted, but the race is still on track for a Saturday finish. The 2026 Iditarod field just got a major boost as 2019 champion Pete Kaiser officially throws his headlamp into the ring for the 54th running of the Last Great Race 🐕! After sitting out in 2025 to balance family life and school sports, the Bethel legend is back for his 16th attempt at the 1,000-mile trek to Nome 🏔️. Kaiser is coming off a historic hot streak, having just secured a record-breaking 10th victory in the Kuskokwim 300 on his home trails this past January 🏆. With nine top-10 finishes and a runner-up spot in 2023 under his belt, he enters the field of 37 mushers as a perennial title contender to watch 🔦. Aurora Borealis Charter School student Laila Taylor is headed back to the big stage 🏀! For the second year in a row, this 10-year-old sharpshooter is traveling to Nampa, Idaho to represent the state of Alaska in the Elks National Hoop Shoot semi-finals ✈️. Laila earned her spot by sinking 15 out of 25 free throws at the local Kenai Elks Lodge competition, and she is ready to take on the best young athletes from across the Pacific Northwest 🌟. Known as a 100 mile-per-hour kid, Laila has been on the court since she was 3 years old with her mom, Amber, coaching her every step of the way 👟. To stay calm under pressure, Laila says she just imagines the crowd as quiet ghosts while she focuses on the rim 👻. The Kenai Elks Lodge is proudly sponsoring her entire trip, highlighting their decades-long commitment to supporting local youth and the community 🤝. After placing third last year, Laila is practicing 50 free throws every single day to chase a spot in the national finals in Chicago this April 🏆.
